UMich Ann Arbor Student Life

Campus life at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor is vibrant and diverse, with plenty of opportunities for students to get involved in a wide range of activities and organizations. Here are some aspects of campus life that make UM-Ann Arbor stand out:

Student Organizations:  With over 1,600 student organizations to choose from, students have plenty of opportunities to stay busy, make friends, and pursue their interests at UM-Ann Arbor. Popular activities include the Michigan Marching Band which performs at football games, parades, and other events and The Michigan Daily, U-M’s student-run newspaper. UMich has over 200 arts-based groups, including several dance and A Cappella groups. UMich can also choose from one of several robotics teams, including Michigan Autonomous Aerial Vehicles, which competes in the International Aerial Robotics Competition, and Michigan Mars Rover, a group that “strives to inspire and educate students about space, Mars exploration, and engineering, and we focus on helping students grow as engineers.” 

Social Life: Ann Arbor is a bustling college town where students can attend concerts, movies, theater performances, and other cultural events, as well as participate in campus-wide events like Welcome Week, Homecoming, and SpringFest. The college itself is known for its party scene, and both house parties and bars are popular among students. UMich also has a vibrant Greek life community, with over 60 fraternities and sororities on campus serving over 5,000 students.

Sports: UM-Ann Arbor is known for its strong athletic programs, with the Michigan Wolverines competing in a wide range of sports, including football, basketball, hockey, and many others. Students can also participate in over 30 club sports or intramural sports, including artistic swimming, climbing, fencing, Taekwondoh and synchronized skating. (Yes, skating.) 

Dining: UM-Ann Arbor offers a variety of dining halls, cafes, grills, and markets to choose from when eating on campus. There are also many restaurants and cafes in the surrounding Ann Arbor area, providing plenty of choices for students. Find them all with this interactive map. For environmentally and health-conscious students, U-M now offers MHealthy labeling for more transparency around the carbon footprint and nutrient content of each food item.

There are many activities and organizations for UMich Ann Arbor students to join – including band, chorus, theater groups, a campus newspaper, a radio station and more.

Interested in Greek life? UMich Ann Arbor has fraternities and sororities.

UMich Ann Arbor has the Michigan Hillel. In fact, more students participate in the Michigan Hillel than any other on-campus activity.

Other popular student organizations at UMich Ann Arbor include K-Grams, M-Powered Entrepreneurship, Dance Marathon and Alternative Spring Break.

Most UMich Ann Arbor students live off campus. In 2022, 28% of undergrads at UMich Ann Arbor lived in some kind of on-campus housing and 72% of students lived off-campus or commuted to UMich Ann Arbor. There are 11,656 spots available in on-campus housing for all 32,282 undergraduates. In the 2021-2022 school year, 8,905 students chose to live on-campus. First year students are allowed to park a car on campus.

UMich Ann Arbor Athletics

At UMich Ann Arbor there are a variety of athletic options for students interested in joining a sports program.

Intercollegiate sports are the highest tier of college sports and can be very competitive. Intercollegiate teams are regulated by the NCAA, funded by the university, and compete against teams from other universities. The division of a sports team depends on the size of the university, funding, and competition level. An intercollegiate school team will be Division I, II or III, with Division I being the highest level.

Club sports are not regulated by the NCAA and are a great option for students not interested in trying out for an intercollegiate team. Club sports are usually student run but can also be funded by the university.

Intramural sports are the most casual and informal. Intramural sports are often free and require very little time commitment.

Safety at UMich Ann Arbor

College is like a home away from home. Whether you're walking to class or coming back from late-night studying (or partying!), it's important to feel safe on campus.

University of Michigan is patroled 24 hours a day by trained security. The UMich Ann Arbor campus has emergency telephones or alarms for students to use anytime of day or night.

UMich Ann Arbor offers late-night transportation or safety escorts for students. Dorms can only be accessed with secure key cards so that students can feel confident that they are safe in on-campus housing.
